HASH HOUSE HARRIERS - CAPE TOWN RSA

A drinking club with a running problem.
Hash House Harriers is the largest social running and walking club in the world where hashers can be found in over 1600 countries. Cape Town HHH was "born" in 1982 and is one of the oldest hashs in Africa. The objective of the Hash is to maintain a certain level of fitness within a social context. CTHHH is an anti-club i.e. there are no fees. There are 2 registered Hash Clubs in Cape Town:

- Cape Town HHH (runs are held every Sunday)
- Cape Town Wednesday HHH (R5.00 sub)

Hash runs are based on a "hare & hounds" format, where a "hare" sets a trail and false trails for the "hounds" to find and follow, using a combination of blobs of flour, small squares of paper or chalk markings to map out a trail. As far as possible, Hash runs are set off-road and entail a substantial amount of cross-country turf. As the trail is found screams of "On On" can be heard from the hashes letting the others know where they think the trail is heading.

Each run is followed by a "circle" of all the hashers, where various light-hearted rituals and traditions are carried out, including the welcoming of "new feet" and the "punishing" of "sinners" who are perceived to have transgressed some Hash etiquette, such as short-cutting on the trail, or even showing too much athletic prowess on the run. HHH is suited to anyone who wants to maintain a certain level of fitness within a social context.
